Often referred to as belt-in-oil systems, wet belts are important in the world of components, but will often be overlooked. A wet belt is similar to a traditional timing belt. In recent years, this part has become more common in modern cars. They have engineering benefits so it is important to replace wet belts at their recommended intervals.
A failure to do so could lead to more expensive car repairs.
Wet belts, lubricated by oil, run inside the engine. Unlike standard timing belts, they run quietly, generate less friction and improve a car’s fuel efficiency. Their purpose, from the perspective of global manufacturers, is to reduce maintenance with long service intervals.

A traditional timing belt runs outside of the car’s engine. They are manufactured from reinforced rubber fibres, and have typical service intervals of between 60,000 miles and 100,000 miles. A wet belt sits in the engine, immersed in oil, and this can increase the lifespan.
Based on the make and model you drive, wet belts last for longer and can have life expectancies of at least 150,000 miles up to 10 years.
In a real-life scenario, however, wet belts can fail sooner than the manufacturer specifies. In our experience, Hersham Service Station recommends replacing them sooner because, if a wet belt fails, it is likely to cause major engine damage and turn what could have been an easy replacement into a complete gearbox rebuild at a higher cost.
The eventual cost of replacing a wet belt can be significantly less.
Wet belts can be affected by the following:
When wet belts fail, the engine’s timing falters and this causes the pistons to collide with the valves. Having to repair or replace your engine will run into thousands of pounds, whereas a replacement will cost significantly less if undertaken by a garage at the right time.
If you hear grinding, rattling or squeaking noises from an engine or suffer from low oil pressures, or if wet belts show visible signs of deterioration, this is an indication that they need to be replaced.
Hersham Service Station can replace wet belts for customers from the Cobham, Esher, East Molesey, West Molesey and Weybridge areas, or in any part of Surrey, using premium-grade components sourced from our local supplier network.
